Sunset from Astoria Park

I tend to go back and forth on whether I prefer to run before or after work – before work means I can go out after work while after work means I get to sleep in. But when I do run after work, I always make sure it gets me to sunset while looking across the East River. Look at the photo and you’ll know what I mean.

Pittsburgh Marathon: Mission Accomplished!

My training didn’t go as well as I’d hoped – a brutal winter which forced me to run on a treadmill way too often combined with the usual gauntlet at work – so I had tempered my hopes at a PR in yesterday’s Pittsburgh Marathon. But I’d be lying if I say I didn’t see my first half time of 2:05(isn) and thought that besting my previous best of 4:14:00 was possible. Alas, it was not meant to be as I eventually forced myself into a slower pace and settled for a decent 4:16:20 which was still better than the 4:20:00 or so I thought I’d clock in at going into the day.

Pittsburgh from Mount Washington

Writing this while sitting at LGA for a flight to Pittsburgh, I thought now would be a good time to unearth a photo from my first trip ever there. Waaaaay back in September 2012, I went there to visit My Buddy Mike and to run a 10K. On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, we rode bikes out from his place in Squirrel Hill and over to one of the inclines. After taking the funicular up, we were treated to this gorgeous view of downtown Pittsburgh.

Faded Subway Map(s)

If you know me, you’ll know that I’m a huge transit nerd. If you really know me, you’ll know I LOVE subway maps. The colors, the schema, the data – what’s not to love? Here, you can see the remnants of several maps which, when stitched together, are comically mismatched. I mean, there’s lines that don’t exist anymore (V, W) and the Williamsburg Bridge crossing is all Nassau Ave in one and Nassau/Sixth in the other. It’s kinda beautiful, really.

Purple Sunset

Leaving the office after another October Cardinals postseason run-induced long day, I encountered this disturbingly purple sky. Quite honestly, if I didn’t have photographic evidence of this, I’d have thought I imagined this all while in a sleep-deprived daze.

Meb!

Meb Keflezighi won today’s emotionally charged Boston Marathon in a blazing 2 hours, 8 minutes, 37 seconds. He’s the first U.S. man to win it since 1983. A little over four years ago, he won the 2009 New York City Marathon, setting a then personal best of 2:09:15. Like in Boston today, Meb’s victory in NYC ended a long drought for American men in the race – an American male last won it in 1982. Here, he’s in the lead pack in Long Island City and wearing the white USA top.
