Pittsburgh Marathon: Mission Accomplished!

My training didn’t go as well as I’d hoped – a brutal winter which forced me to run on a treadmill way too often combined with the usual gauntlet at work – so I had tempered my hopes at a PR in yesterday’s Pittsburgh Marathon. But I’d be lying if I say I didn’t see my first half time of 2:05(isn) and thought that besting my previous best of 4:14:00 was possible. Alas, it was not meant to be as I eventually forced myself into a slower pace and settled for a decent 4:16:20 which was still better than the 4:20:00 or so I thought I’d clock in at going into the day.

Meb!

Meb Keflezighi won today’s emotionally charged Boston Marathon in a blazing 2 hours, 8 minutes, 37 seconds. He’s the first U.S. man to win it since 1983. A little over four years ago, he won the 2009 New York City Marathon, setting a then personal best of 2:09:15. Like in Boston today, Meb’s victory in NYC ended a long drought for American men in the race – an American male last won it in 1982. Here, he’s in the lead pack in Long Island City and wearing the white USA top.

Yankees! Red Sox! Baseball!

After whetting the appetite with some exhibition games in Montreal, it was good to see some actual baseball that counted last night at Yankee Stadium. Despite this being the most unrecognizable Yankee lineup I’ve ever seen in the Bronx, they still managed to beat the defending World Champion Boston Red Sox. Many thanks to my buddy Bruce for the freebie ticket.

Snow Falling at the Manhattan Bridge Entrance

Yet another blizzard hits New York City! That’s quickly becoming a regular occurrence around here. At least the city was prepared this time and most people knew to stay off the roads. Of course, that doesn’t mean that it still wasn’t an adventure trying to get around. Just take these people trying to cross Canal St at the foot of the Manhattan Bridge – a long crossing, especially when snow is flying at your face.

BTW, this is the first photo posted here that was taken with my brand new Canon 50D DSLR. So happy.

Cookie Monster and Elmo Hang Out in Times Square

This is easily the most popular photo I’ve ever taken if my Flickr stats and numerous Gothamist appearances are any indication. This wasn’t my Project 365 photo for that day and it really was just a throwaway shot, at least in my mind it was, but I thought it was funny enough to post. I didn’t know the origin of these guys being in Times Square, that they were essentially scumbags who wanted money for photos.

Mr. Met Enters the Stands at Shea

Oh, Mr. Met, you really are the hardest working mascot in baseball! I just wish you didn’t have to suffer through the bad days since October 19, 2006. You know, the night when Carlos Beltran never took the bat off his shoulders to end Game 7 of the 2006 NLCS. It’s been downhill since that night but you, sir, never let it bring you down; heck, you still have a smile on your baseball-shaped head all the time!

The Hold Steady Backstage at Columbia University

While talking to The Hold Steady lead singer Craig Finn at Rachael’s holiday party last weekend, I was reminded of this photo I took some years back. At this point in time, they had yet to release their third album, Boys and Girls in America, the album that would catapult them into stardom. They were performing at Columbia University’s annual Concert on the Steps though it would be indoors this year due to rain. That worked out great because the lighting indoors was great and the concert shots came out beautifully. I managed to get this shot of the band just moments before they hit the stage.

The National + Yo La Tengo

On the last night of Hannukah, which also coincides with the last night of the Yo La Tengo 8-night long residency at Maxwell’s in Hoboken – funny how that just works out, no? – The National was the special guest opener. The National. Opening and playing in a 200-person venue. That’s something I thought I’d never see since Boxer was released in 2007 and their star rose rapidly. As much fun as it was to see them here, it only made me long to see them again in a much larger venue so they can have their full orchestral backing and nifty light show as well as much better sound. But, you know what, I can’t complain because just a few weeks ago, I was thinking I wish I’d gotten to see them a second time this year and, just like that, problem solved.

I’ll admit I bought the ticket because I heard The National would be there that night. And while I don’t love Yo La Tengo, I do like them and they’re a good band to see live. A good set which ended with Ira wading into the crowd during their last song.
