Citi Field Between Games of a Doubleheader

When I took this photo between games in a doubleheader between the Mets and Dodgers, I had no idea that they would be one of the few highlights of the season. They would win both games behind an effective Johan Santana in the first game and an offensive barrage in the second game. This would be games five and six of an eight-game winning streak, one of two such streaks they’d have in 2010. How can a team with two long winning streaks end up at 79-83 for the season? Simple, they’d have trouble even winning two consecutive games after the All-Star break. Only the Mets…

Sam Calagione (and His Ghost)

Dogfish Head founder Sam Calagione is one of the more charismatic and colorful characters the craft beer industry has. The Discovery Channel clearly believes he is as they’ve tabbed him to host Brew Masters, their new show about craft beer which – I’m taking this from the press release – “follows Sam and his partners in suds as they travel the country and the world sourcing exotic ingredients and discovering ancient techniques to produce beers of astounding originality.” I don’t know if this show, premiering November 21, will be a hit or if it will even be good but I can’t imagine that it won’t be interesting to some degree, especially for the beer geeks.

Of course, I didn’t know about any of this when I took this shot at the pre-party for Extreme Beer Fest back in February. This shot, with the blur of Calagione still there, happened because he’s so very expressive when he talks and even using the flash, I couldn’t get a still shot of him. I won’t complain because I think this one turned out better this way.

Digital Raindrops in Herald Square

On my way over to Madison Square Garden to watch a college basketball doubleheader with Rachael, I passed through Herald Square. It was the holiday season which I guess is why they had these white lights hanging off the tree branches. It created a really neat, almost raindrop like effect as the light flickered and cascaded down. It’s barely November and I already have Christmas on the brain, which is why I decided to go back and post this photo. Thank you, relentless advertising, for drilling the holidays into me already.

Sunlight Reflecting Off Dark Waters

It was Aaron and Jeremy’s last day in the Bay Area but we hadn’t really spent much time seeing the sights in San Francisco. We had some time to kill before dinner so we spent a little time walking through Fisherman’s Wharf, especially in and around the piers. While looking out across the bay, I took a photo of the sun as it poked out from above the clouds, reflecting on the dark waters below. The combination of the bright sun, grey clouds, dark water – awesome.

Night Sky Through the Airplane Window

Shortly after my flight from SFO to JFK took off and we were told we could use “approved electronic devices,” I quickly whipped out my camera so I could grab a shot of the moon in the pitch black sky as it hovered over northern California. It was a picturesque end to a week full of great images caught through my lens. And plenty of great food too, all of which you can see at Foodie Call:

Oh, and good friends too but I don’t have many photos of those guys. Screw ’em.

One Dart to Win It All

This dart (double-8) was the last dart my team, Edge of Insanity, threw last season. It came in the 33rd game of a best-of-32 Division C championship match. Now you’re probably wondering “33rd game in a best-of-32 – how’s that possible?” Well, that’ll happen when you have a 16-16 tie after playing 32 games. It’s a tie, I should point out, that we were fortunate to salvage after jumping out to a 13-6 lead, only to fall behind 16-15 going into the 32nd game. Rules dictate that a 1001, single-in, double-out 4-pe-team tiebreaker be played in case of a tie after all games have been played. Again, we held an early lead and seemed ready to cruise to victory until our opponents caught up, taking it down to where any dart could win it. Finally, on our first chance to win it, Spencer sealed the deal with the double-8 on the very first dart.

Catching the Sun Setting in Williamsburg

I was walking from the G train along Metropolitan Avenue to Fette Sau for some pre-party eating and, for some reason, I just felt like taking this photo. It was well since my Project 365 ended (all 365 photos were taken but I got lazy and stopped posting months ago) so it’s not like I was compelled to take a photo that day. Dunno, maybe it was the cool reddish sunset breaking through the overcast skies. Or maybe it’s the sad, solemn (in my mind, anyway) Mets fan waiting to cross the street.
